How to Evaluate Natural Gypsum Before Import: Purity, SO3, Moisture, Size and COA

The lowest gypsum price per metric ton is not necessarily the lowest production cost. A responsible comparison must examine gypsum purity, free moisture, combined water, SO3 and CaO profile, impurities, particle size, sample traceability, packing and the documents that govern final acceptance.

Why two gypsum offers with the same price can have different real costs

A commercial offer normally shows a price per metric ton, but the factory consumes usable mineral, not invoice weight alone. More free moisture, lower gypsum purity, excessive non-gypsum residue or unsuitable particle size can make one apparently cheap shipment more expensive to process.

The difference can appear later as higher drying demand, additional crushing or grinding, inconsistent feed, greater residue, additional waste, line instability or a rejected lot. These are operating costs even when they are absent from the headline price.

Natural gypsum chemistry: what the formula proves—and what it does not

Natural gypsum is calcium sulfate dihydrate, written as CaSO4·2H2O. This identifies the mineral phase. It does not mean that every rock, lump or powder shipment is 100% gypsum. Commercial approval must rely on current analysis for the selected source and lot.

Combined water

Combined water is part of the gypsum crystal structure. It is relevant to mineral identity, thermal processing and calcination review. It must not be confused with surface or free moisture.

Free moisture

Free moisture is physically held water that can affect transport weight, storage, handling, caking, drying demand and commercial comparison. Its test basis and limit should be written.

SO3 and CaO profile

SO3 and CaO help review calcium-sulfate chemistry, but they must be read with the full analysis, water basis and agreed method.

Purity

“Gypsum purity” needs a defined calculation or test basis. A percentage without method, sample identity and date is not enough for final approval.

Do not compare one supplier’s purity value with another supplier’s SO3 value as though they were identical. Confirm what each number represents and whether it is reported on a wet or dry basis.

How to read a gypsum COA without being misled by a neat table

A certificate of analysis is useful only when it is connected to the offered material. Confirm the sample identity, sampling date, source or lot, laboratory, methods, units, reporting basis and whether the document represents current stock, an actual shipment or only a historical reference.

Representative sampling is more important than a perfect laboratory result

A laboratory can test only the sample it receives. If that sample does not represent the shipment, an accurate result can still create false confidence. The sampling plan should define increment locations, composite preparation, sealing, duplicate samples, laboratory, analysis methods and which report governs acceptance.

Product form and logistics can change total operating cost

Natural gypsum may be supplied as rock, lumps or powder. The right form depends on the buyer’s crusher, mill, storage, dust-control system, unloading route and production process. Powder may reduce on-site size reduction but increase dust and packing requirements. Larger rock or lumps may suit bulk handling but create additional crushing or screening demand.

What is the most important specification for natural gypsum?

There is no universal single parameter. Buyers normally review purity, SO3, CaO, free moisture, combined water or LOI, impurities, particle size and lot consistency according to the process.

Is CaSO4·2H2O the same as guaranteed gypsum purity?

No. It is the chemical formula of the mineral. Commercial purity is the measured proportion of gypsum in the tested material.
