Natural Gypsum Procurement Guide
How to Evaluate Natural Gypsum Before Import: Purity, SO3, Moisture, Size and COA
The lowest gypsum price per metric ton is not necessarily the lowest production cost. A responsible comparison must examine gypsum purity, free moisture, combined water, SO3 and CaO profile, impurities, particle size, sample traceability, packing and the documents that govern final acceptance.

Why two gypsum offers with the same price can have different real costs
A commercial offer normally shows a price per metric ton, but the factory consumes usable mineral, not invoice weight alone. More free moisture, lower gypsum purity, excessive non-gypsum residue or unsuitable particle size can make one apparently cheap shipment more expensive to process.
The difference can appear later as higher drying demand, additional crushing or grinding, inconsistent feed, greater residue, additional waste, line instability or a rejected lot. These are operating costs even when they are absent from the headline price.
TAS Flowrance’s natural gypsum product page presents the available forms and export routes. This guide addresses the separate procurement decision: how the offered material should be compared and approved.
Natural gypsum chemistry: what the formula proves—and what it does not
Natural gypsum is calcium sulfate dihydrate, written as CaSO4·2H2O. This identifies the mineral phase. It does not mean that every rock, lump or powder shipment is 100% gypsum. Commercial approval must rely on current analysis for the selected source and lot.
Combined water
Combined water is part of the gypsum crystal structure. It is relevant to mineral identity, thermal processing and calcination review. It must not be confused with surface or free moisture.
Free moisture
Free moisture is physically held water that can affect transport weight, storage, handling, caking, drying demand and commercial comparison. Its test basis and limit should be written.
SO3 and CaO profile
SO3 and CaO help review calcium-sulfate chemistry, but they must be read with the full analysis, water basis and agreed method.
Purity
“Gypsum purity” needs a defined calculation or test basis. A percentage without method, sample identity and date is not enough for final approval.
The eight parameters that should control natural gypsum approval
Application fit: the same gypsum is not automatically suitable for every factory
| Buyer application | Critical review areas | Risk if ignored | Approval route |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cement manufacturing | Gypsum content, SO3, moisture, impurities, feed size and consistency. | Variable grinding, handling or setting-control performance. | Plant specification, current COA, representative sample and production validation. |
| Calcination and plaster | Purity, combined water, free moisture, impurity profile, feed size and kiln compatibility. | Variable thermal demand, residue or unstable plaster behaviour. | Lab review followed by calcination and application trial. |
| Gypsum-board production | Consistency, chemistry, color, moisture, grindability and formulation compatibility. | Line instability, variable set or appearance problems. | Current lot data, sample approval and plant-line trial where required. |
| Agricultural or soil use | Calcium and sulfur basis, particle size, impurities and local regulation. | Incorrect agronomic expectation or regulatory non-compliance. | Application-specific analysis and buyer-country review. |
Buyers requiring processed hemihydrate material should continue to the calcined gypsum powder page. The wider product route is explained on the gypsum and construction materials page.
How to read a gypsum COA without being misled by a neat table
A certificate of analysis is useful only when it is connected to the offered material. Confirm the sample identity, sampling date, source or lot, laboratory, methods, units, reporting basis and whether the document represents current stock, an actual shipment or only a historical reference.
TAS Flowrance explains the evidence chain on its Quality Assurance & Inspection page. Public references support initial screening; the active COA, approved sample, agreed method and final offer should control the transaction.
Representative sampling is more important than a perfect laboratory result
A laboratory can test only the sample it receives. If that sample does not represent the shipment, an accurate result can still create false confidence. The sampling plan should define increment locations, composite preparation, sealing, duplicate samples, laboratory, analysis methods and which report governs acceptance.

The purchase order must convert the specification into enforceable acceptance
| Clause | What should be fixed in writing | Why it protects the buyer |
|---|---|---|
| Product identity | Natural gypsum rock, lumps or powder; source or lot basis where applicable. | Prevents substitution with a different or undefined form. |
| Chemical specification | Minimums, maximums, methods, units and wet/dry reporting basis. | Makes results comparable and measurable. |
| Physical specification | Particle size, top size, fines, oversize and packing condition. | Protects handling and process compatibility. |
| Sampling and inspection | Location, timing, increment plan, sealing, laboratory and report recipients. | Connects analysis to the actual shipment. |
| Commercial weight basis | Net weight, moisture basis, weighing method and price adjustment. | Prevents disputes involving water or weight. |
| Acceptance and remedy | Tolerance, rejection, replacement, price adjustment and claims timing. | Defines what happens when material is outside specification. |
Product form and logistics can change total operating cost
Natural gypsum may be supplied as rock, lumps or powder. The right form depends on the buyer’s crusher, mill, storage, dust-control system, unloading route and production process. Powder may reduce on-site size reduction but increase dust and packing requirements. Larger rock or lumps may suit bulk handling but create additional crushing or screening demand.
Align size with loading method, moisture protection, storage, port route, vessel or container option and receiving equipment. Current handling routes are shown on the Export Operations page.

Frequently asked questions
What is the most important specification for natural gypsum?
There is no universal single parameter. Buyers normally review purity, SO3, CaO, free moisture, combined water or LOI, impurities, particle size and lot consistency according to the process.
Is CaSO4·2H2O the same as guaranteed gypsum purity?
No. It is the chemical formula of the mineral. Commercial purity is the measured proportion of gypsum in the tested material.
Why does free moisture matter?
It can affect paid weight, storage, caking, drying demand and the quantity of dry usable mineral received.
Can a historical COA approve a new shipment?
It may support screening, but final approval should use current evidence connected to the offered lot or shipment.
Should gypsum be approved by color alone?
No. Appearance cannot replace chemistry, moisture, sizing, traceable sampling and process testing.
